As the maxim goes, a healthy population is a wealthy nation and if this without doubt is profoundly necessary and appealing to our growing population, then it is incumbent upon the government to ensure that it presides over a country of healthy inhabitants and as such. the most important place to start from is to place the health sector under the microscope and take a thorough and critical review of the entire health care delivery system in order to find out why the current policy has fallen short of measuring up to the trigger-down effect.
Let’s face the hard fact of reality, despite the famous and popular song of the age that this nation is blessed with tremendous rich resources including promising forests, as long as vast majority of the people remains stuck in poor health, the growth, development and greatness in terms of prosperity and the sustainability of the future will forever stay bleak thus being completely at the mercy of plunderers whose calculated interest is to drain the country dry and prepare it for doomsday.
With so much wealth being commandeered by just a privileged few with no vested interest and concern about the viability of the health care delivery system let alone to mention how well it will properly serve the health needs of those although in the greater majority yet can not afford to foot their medical bills, are also victims of double trouble; that they can not pay for their medical bill and that the not-well-organized system for them turns out not to be readily available and too often unaffordable.
But here is the irony, the privileged few who impress on the mind of the public and the world that the health sector coupled with the various institutions is meaningfully up to the task, they themselves dare not trek that path because they are fully aware of how frustrating and disappointing those big and beautiful buildings are when it comes to actual performance in keeping with the requisite drugs to cater to the health needs of the patience; yet even when they (privileged few) are tracked down by malaria and even to carry out their check up, indeed they are soon out of the country either landing in Ghana and other places to treat themselves while their own health centers are lumbered with all sorts of service setback and inadequacies of drugs, the rightful equipment as well as capacities including beds to host patience who will be required to be admitted due to their conditions.
We have seen this far too long and at this juncture, it is binding on the government to urgently re-work its focus and do what is most needed and important that will enable mainly the public health sector to get a fresh injection of seriousness through which the entire health care delivery system nationwide will not only be revamped, but that the lost hope, trust and aspiration of the people in the public health centers will be fruitfully resuscitated so that they can not be left at the mercy of the roaming black-baggers and quacks who in the process believing to be doing the affected a saving favor only end up causing more harm than good.
No matter how educated and trained and professional the people may be, once they are saddled with poor health, the nation stands to lose its future because those who can afford it know the significance of good health that is why without hesitation, they are rushing up and down in strange land in search of genuine medical care and treatments. They are too aware that poor health stalls progress and happiness.
The government must not only be satisfied with some little figure enshrined in the national budget for health, it must go beyond the figure and demonstrate the will power to ensure that its first and foremost priority is to be certain that some clearly defined avenues are established as a major component for all of its citizens through which a quality health care delivery system that is people-centered is put in place and consistently sustained through the trigger-down result with emphasis on being “available and affordable”.
We challenged the authorities responsible to Invest more in the people’s health needs if this country is to survive the mammoth tasks of reconstruction and nation building, and let’s not slip an inch that we can expect others to build and run our country while a great majority of the people becomes the imprisoned guests of curable sicknesses, but remains pinned down in poor health. The Macedonian call here is for the government and all stakeholders to devote more time, energy and resources to the upliftment and rapid improvement of the health sector and remain unwavering to see that the health care delivery system must take center stage in their planning and commitment.
Presiding over a nation loaded with bunch of people deeply bothered with poor health is similar to one forcing a sifter to store water which is practically unthinkable- the sifter will attempt to contain the water, but it soon finds its way out and fast. If the future of this country will have to be among the shining example of a well sustained nation then the government and contributing partners must improve the health sector and the health care delivery system which is a cardinal key to national development and survival.
