SWAT, NOCAL Commended

The leadership of the Amputees National Team of Liberia on Thursday commended the   management of Supplying West Africa Trade (SWAT)  and the National Oil Company for Liberia (NOCAL) for  proving them with the needed support for the upcoming tournament.

The president of the Liberia Amputee Football Federation Melvin Gotteh told this paper that the gesture to the team at this time was timely and they called on other groups to come in to support the upcoming team.

Timberwolves Eye LBA Championship Title

First Division Basketball Club Timberwolves has vowed to win the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) first division Championship this season.

Speaking to reporters recently in Monrovia, the president of the club Dr. Tobias Bowen said his administration will do everything possible to capture the first division title this term.

“Despite we are new in this division; we are decisive to take the day if any chance comes on our way during the competition,” he said.

The Vice President for Technical Affairs at the Liberia Wushu Association Junior Pewee Russian  along with a member of the association Jumiel Smith return to the country over the weekend after completing a six-month studies in China.

The Liberia heavy-weight Taekwondo champion and his colleague were provided the scholarships by the Chinese Government through its embassy accredited near Monrovia.

The move is in support of technically preparing Liberians to take the sport to another level in by developing the game of Wushu in Liberia.

The two Liberian Wushu practitioners arrived in the country as internationally-trained coaches in Wushu; a Chinese form of Martial Arts.

For Master Junior Pewee Russian, he earned two dans in China which tallied his dans to eight (8) and Jumiel Smith, was given a dan.

Speaking upon his arrival, the eight dan-holders promised to provide education in martial art in the country coupled with what he learnt in the course of six months.

According to him, he is prepared to work with all artists to take the country forward in the newly introduced game in the country.

The man is now considered by China as their Ambassador in the sport noting that the game is not limited to only the younger ones but also the older people.

 

Jumiel who formed part of the two-man trip said they are home to share knowledge obtained during their stay in that Asian country.

The arrival of the two artists at the Roberts International Airport was graced with spectacular performances from students attending Rush Academy.

For Liberians Selected For U.S. Girls Basketball Exchange Program

Four Liberians on being selected to participate in a U.S. Government-sponsored Sports United Multi-Country Basketball Visitors Program in April were congratulated by U.S. Ambassador Deborah Malac and Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, S. Tornorlah Varpilah.

At a pre-departure briefing at the U.S. Embassy March 28, Ambassador Malac praised the three high school basketball players, Dagces A. Goodridge, Evans Nuch Kollie and Harriet Duosaye, and coach Amii Dekontee Weah, for being chosen to represent Liberia in the exchange program.  “Sports programs are very important to a person’s development,” the Ambassador said.  “They help you develop leadership skills, promote teamwork, teach you how to get along with others and promote sportsmanship.  I have seen this happen because my daughter is an athlete.”

LNWBF Plans Reunion Tournament

The Liberia National Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Federation have earmarked National Reconciliation Competition tournament on March 15, 2013.

The Vice President of LNWBF Devine T. Pearson noted that the competition is intended to reconcile all gyms within the country in line with other sporting disciplines in the country.

According to him, the reconciliation competition will bring together several categories for the showpiece; he named the categories as Heavy Weight, Middle Weight, Light Weight and Feather Weight.

VP Pearson revealed that the competition is free of registration and winners of the four categories will hit the ground running with huge cash prizes.
